Remembrance Day was originally called Armistice Day.
Remembrance Day was originally called Armistice Day.
Armistice Day was first observed to commemorate the truce that ended the First World War on November 11, 1918. While the day is still officially known as Remembrance Day, it is also widely known as Poppy Day because of the tradition of wearing the red remembrance poppy, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields,” which memorializes fallen soldiers.
“In Flanders Fields”
Canadian poet, physician and soldier Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae wrote “In Flanders Fields” in 1915, describing the red poppies that grew in the fields where soldiers died. Inspired by the poem, the red poppy became an international symbol of remembrance for those who fought and fell in service.
